Family Care International receives MacArthur Foundation award
$1 Million award recognizes FCI for extraordinary creativity and effectiveness
February 28, 2013
FCI is one of only 13 nonprofit organizations around the world selected to receive this year’s MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. The award, which was announced today, recognizes grantees who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and impact, and invests in their long-term sustainability with sizable one-time grants.
The MacArthur Foundation has provided program support to FCI for a range of maternal and reproductive health projects over many years. This special award, according to MacArthur, represents not only recognition of FCI’s past success and leadership but also an investment in its future. FCI will use this support to upgrade its financial technology and infrastructure, and to build its cash reserves.
“It’s every woman’s right to go through the process of pregnancy and childbirth without facing the risk of dying,” said FCI president Ann Starrs. “This is an issue of fairness, of equity, and of justice for women in the developing world. The MacArthur award will help FCI get the message about our work out to the world.” Through this grant, MacArthur recognizes the broad, long-term impact of FCI’s work to ensure that all women have access to reproductive health care throughout their lives, and especially during the high-risk period of pregnancy and childbirth.
Saving women’s lives and protecting their health, MacArthur’s announcement noted, advances the health, well-being, and prosperity of families and of entire communities. FCI’s work pairs direct work strengthening the capacity of local advocates, organizations, and governments in developing countries with a powerful advocacy voice on the global stage.
MacArthur President Robert Gallucci highlighted the deep impact of the 13 organizations selected for this year’s awards. “From New York to New Delhi, these extraordinary organizations are making a real difference in the lives of people and communities. MacArthur recognizes their importance and impact, and we hope our investment will help ensure that they continue to thrive and to increase their reach in the future.”
For these Awards, the Foundation does not seek or accept nominations. To qualify, organizations must demonstrate exceptional creativity and effectiveness; have reached a critical or strategic point in their development; show strong leadership and stable financial management; have previously received MacArthur support; and engage in work central to one of MacArthur’s core programs.
